Turmeric sometimes called Indian saffron or the golden spice and also known as Curcuma, Curcuma Aromatica, Curcuma Domestica, Curcumae Longa, Curcumae Longae Rhizoma, Curcumin, Radix Curcumae, Rajani, Rhizoma Cucurmae Longae, Safran Bourbon, Safran de Batallita, Safran des Indes, Turmeric Root, Yu Jin, is one of the plants in the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, found mostly in Africa, Asia and America, is according to reports, a flowering plant made of about fifty genera and over one thousand six hundred aromatic spices in perennial herbs. It has a welcoming, heady but bitter taste and is commonly used to color curry powders, mustards, butters, and cheeses. In the past, turmeric has been used largely in South Asia in Ayurvedic medicine in treatment and control of conditions such as rheumatism, fatigue, difficulty in breathing and severe pains. 

In recent times, Turmeric is being used as dietary supplement in cases such as arthritis, stomach problems, skin infections, liver and gallbladder related problems and also cancer. The underground stem of the plant are most times dried and made into capsules, tablets, teas and the powder is made into paste for treating various skin conditions.

In parts of the world like India and some Asian countries, Turmeric is used for spicy meals and its leaf is used in the preparation of dishes such as patelo and cake sfoufas.
